It’s hard to believe that as I write this that some nine weeks have passed since many of us were together in Troy for our Winter Institute. Again, congratulations to Chairperson Aaron Desentz and the entire Professional Development committee for an excellent conference. I join in expressing the common theme that I heard over and over again that not only were the content and site outstanding, but it was great to be with each other at long last. Read more.

Pick a Lane Robert Bruner | Chair, Ethics Committee
My exposure to public service began at a young age through the Boy Scouts of America. Scouting was the formative experience in my life when I graduated from high school and went to college, so I decided to study political science and public service. I thought I would like to serve the public by becoming a United States Senator. Read more.

Preparing the Next-Gen Thomas A. Tanghe | Recipient, MME Mentoring Award
Go figure. I miss the MME Winter Conference and win the MME Mentoring Award. But seriously, I want to thank those who made the decision to recognize my work in preparing the next generation of leaders in local government. Truth be told, many have gone on to success in the private sector, but I feel pretty good about that too. But no doubt some have pursued careers in local government such as Amanda (Thomas) Opalewski of Sterling Heights, and Andrew Hagge, who is now with the City of Auburn Hills in a full-time role. Being a professional manager, no matter what the title, is never easy. These days that seems truer than ever. Know that your fellow members and association are there for you. We’ve seen it time and time again on our listserv and in direct contacts. Longtime Manager Mark Wollenweber heads up our Senior Advisor service conducted in conjunction with the ICMA.
