One of the things I have come to appreciate about this role over the past six+ months is that I have been able to interact with colleagues around the state in a wider variety of settings than I normally would. Sometimes, it is simply someone with a question or an idea who calls, and we have the chance to catch up during the conversation. Part of this is also by design, as I continue to try and make my way to as many of the regional meetings as possible. Read more. |

Fostering Effective Council-Manager Relations

The Early Career Outreach Committee would like to invite all those in the municipal management field to a summer training session on Friday, August 16, focused on council-manager relations.
Councilmembers and managers play distinctively different roles in communities. Councilmembers serve the role of policymakers and agenda setters: adopting budgets and setting the goals of the organization. Meanwhile, managers serve the role of managing the day-to-day operations of the organization: implementing policies approved by council and coordinating staff and community services. Read more.

Ethics in Our Municipalities

Tenet 3 of the ICMA Code of Ethics: “Demonstrate by word and action the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity in all public, professional, and personal relationships in order that the member may merit the trust and respect of the elected and appointed officials, employees, and the public.”
Ethical conduct is the bedrock of our profession. The ICMA code of ethics has existed since 1924 and provided the foundation to the success of the city manager form of government. Read more.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Update

In January of 2024, city leaders and practitioners in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion gathered at the Michigan Municipal Executives Winter Institute in Lansing, Michigan. Their purpose? To engage in a critical session titled “Let’s Talk About DEI,” highlighting the work of Keith Van Beek, city manager of Holland; Mark Washington, city manager of Grand Rapids; and Holly Young, inclusion and experience manager for Wolverine Worldwide. ICMA YSEALI Professional Fellows Program

ICMA has been implementing the YSEALI Professional Fellows Program for the past 10 years, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State. It is a professional development exchange program that provides selected participants from Southeast Asia aged 25–35 the opportunity to spend five and a half weeks in the United States. Read more. |
