Like many of you, my late summer and early fall have been busy. It has been great to see so many of you along the way at the MML Convention, the ICMA Conference in Pittsburgh, and my trip to visit the UP Managers at their Fall Gathering in Negaunee. I have had some incredible conversations with a lot of you and I always come away with a sense of pride in our profession after hearing about and seeing some of the great things you are all doing in your communities. Christine Burns Recognized with Patriatche Award
This fall at the annual Michigan Municipal League Convention, former MME President Christine Burns was recognized with the John M. Patriarche Distinguished Service Award for her contributions over a career of service to communities and the municipal management profession. Advocacy Committee Update

In October, the Advocacy Committee worked on a clear communication to the City of Lansing Charter Commission, offering to connect them with experts to provide information on the council manager form of government. The committee was prepared to have managers and mayors from successful Michigan local governments, ICMA advocacy staff, and academic experts prepare and present factual, detailed information about this most effective, efficient and responsive form for local government. Sadly, the commission ignored our offer and formally voted on October 24 to present a new charter to voters that retains a strong mayor form. Read more. |

Early Career Outreach Committee Update

The Early Career Outreach Committee has made a few adjustments to its training schedule for the year. The originally planned fall training session will be rescheduled to spring 2025. This change allows the committee to incorporate additional resources and provide a more comprehensive experience for all participants. Member SUPPORT Committee Update

The board recently approved a name change for the Member Success Committee to the Member Support Committee. The board challenged the committee to review its focus and determine if the name was still appropriate. We love the successes our members have had, but we know there is an increasing need for support services. The committee thought it was important to change the name to have a targeted focus on the effort to support MME members through services and resources. Read more. |

Professional Development Committee Update

The Michigan Municipal Executives Professional Development Committee is actively planning for our upcoming Winter Institute, scheduled to take place in Bay City, January 28–31, 2025. This year, the committee has chosen "relationships" as the conference theme, with a focus on strengthening council-manager and manager-staff relations. We are curating content to provide valuable insights, practical tools, and strategies to help build and maintain effective, collaborative relationships within municipalities. Read more. |
