Time to Check In | President’s Column May 2025

At the beginning of the MME Board of Directors meeting in late April, I started the meeting with a “check-in question,” which I often do with the meetings I lead. I went around the room and the Zoom screen and asked everyone this question, “What is your favorite springtime activity?” As you can imagine, with a board made up of diverse thoughts and backgrounds, there were a variety of answers. Some enjoy gardening, fishing, running or walking the local rail trail, golfing, the kickoff of baseball season, and even sitting outside to enjoy the smell of freshly cut grass. Read more.

Making decisions about career moves can be daunting. Considering whether to make the shift from an assistant or deputy manager role to the manager position is particularly intimidating. Even before assessing whether your skillset coincides with a hiring community’s needs, you will need to consider whether taking a manager position is in your desired career path and if it’s the right time to pursue the position. Ethics Committee Update

Tenet 7 of the ICMA Code of Ethics: “Refrain from all political activities which undermine public confidence in professional administrators. Refrain from participation in the election of the members of the employing legislative body.”
Tenet 7 comes with a number of guidelines to aid members in staying within the ethical framework. The second sentence of the tenet is fairly self-evident for members, although what constitutes “participation” may not always be clear.

Experience Committee Update

The Experience Committee unanimously approved the submission of William Baldridge for ICMA’s Distinguished Service Award (DSA) consideration. Mr. Baldridge had a long and distinguished city management career—including service as both MME president and ICMA president. Read more.

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

The support we provide each other as managers can be likened to that of a good neighbor.  


Neighborliness is, unfortunately, a somewhat dated concept. Many of us don’t know our neighbors anymore. We may describe them as, “the one with the dog that barks at night” or “the one that doesn’t move their garbage can back to the house until Thursday” or “the one that has a pristine lawn and lovely garden.” Read more.
